Human Geo Test

“On my honor, I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this graded academic work. I am a person of integrity and I do not cheat.” Agree to this statement by typing your name here: Matt Ryan

Globalization is the increasing interconnectedness of people and places through converging processes of economic, political, and cultural change. Those who are pro-globalization believe that wealth will “trickle-down” from rich countries to poor countries. They also believe it will spread the benefits of new ideas and new jobs to all nations. One organization that loans money to nations so they can invest in business is the World Bank. On the other hand, those who are anti-globalization say it is not fair, because the richest 20% of the world’s people consume 86% of the world’s resources, resulting in globalization between “haves” and “have nots.”

Use the CIA Factbook to answer the following questions: In Afghanistan the life expectancy is 44.64 , the infant mortality rate is 151.95 deaths per 1000 live births, the literacy rate is 28.1%, and the TFR is 6.53. In Australia the life expectancy is 81.63, the infant mortality rate is 4.75 deaths per 1000 live births, the literacy rate is 99%, and the TFR is 1.78.

We often categorize nations as being “developed” or “developing” nations. Vietnam and Mexico would be considered developing nations; Japan and Canada are developed nations.

The current world population is over 6 billion people. The number that measures how many children the average woman in a nation will bear is known as the Total Fertility Rate , which is abbreviated as TFR. When this number is exactly 2.1 , then the population stays the same; if it’s higher, the population goes up, and if it’s lower, the population decreases. The population is growing fastest in developing nations.

A population pyramid that is shaped just like a pyramid -- wide on the bottom and narrow at the top -- shows a country whose population is increasing. If it is shaped more like a vase or a soda bottle, that nation’s population is staying the same. Young people are found at the bottom of the pyramid, and Males are found on the left hand side.

When discussing migration, people who are entering a country are known as immigrants, and people who are leaving a country are known as emigrants .

People leave their country for many reasons. An example of a push force is War, and an example of a pull force is Job opportunities . If a nation’s net migration rate is a negative number, it means more people are leaving the country than are arriving.

STEP THREE: In a short, well-written essay, answer ONE of the following questions:

OR 3) The demographic transition graph describes the changes in birthrates and death rates that a country experiences over time. Describe the changes that the United States has gone through by using the demographic transition diagram.

In Stage 1 population growth is low because of a high birth rate and a high death rates, so each cancel each other out. In stage 2 the death rate declines and the birth rates stay the same. This causes a massive population growth. In stage 3 birth rate goes down but the population is high now. In stage 4 there is more growth, but the difference between total population and birth rate/ death rate is huge.

STEP FOUR: First, go to the following website and read the news story you will find there:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/24/world/americas/24mexico.html

Then, in a short yet brilliant essay, summarize that story by relating it to our studies of immigration in class. Try to use terms from the text and from our class discussions.

Many Mexican immigrants have been coming in to our country illegally. The US has a pull factor of job opportunities. Mexico has a push factor of bad economy. About 11.5 million immigrants are living in the US. About 7 million of them are illegal.

STEP FIVE: When you have finished your test, publish your post.

The Demographic Transition

Demographic Transition= a four stage conceptualization that tracks changes in birth rates through time as a population urbanizes. Stage 1 is characterized by high birth rates, leading to a very slow rate of natural increase. In stage 2, death rates fall dramatically while birth rates remain high, producing a rapid rise in the RNI. Even as death rates fall, it takes time for people to respond with lower birth rates, which begin in stage 3. Then in the transitional stage, people apparently become aware of the advantages of smaller families in urban and industrial settings. In stage 4, a very low RNI results from a combination of lower birthrates and very low death rates. As a result, there is very little natural population increase.

Developed to undeveloped countries

Cambodia United States
C TFR=3.0 US TFR= 2.1
C % of young=70% US % of young=30 %
C % of old=10.5% US % of old=12.8 %
C Life expectancy=62 US Life expectancy=78

The US will stay the same because the amount of people that can have babys are smaller. Cambodia's population will grow because most of their population are people with the ability to have babys.

Did you know 2.0

In the future the largest country speaking English will be China. This is interesting to me because we originally spoke English. They will have more people speaking English because they will have more people in their country.

Paragraph summerazation

They use local recourse for international export to back foreign debts, rather than using them for resources for that country or local area. This cause overexploitation of local resources. They also note that the IMF oft requires developing countries to adopt programs of fiscal austerity that often entails a substantial reduction in public spending for education, health, and food subsidies.
